Chinchillas
Welcome

to the fascinating world of

Chinchillas

Chinchillas are quite large rodents (about the size of a smaller guineapig), that have an exceptionally long life span (up to 20 and more years) with the softest fur ever. Starting off as animals bred for fur, they soon found their way into people's homes and were found to be very amusing, entertaining pets. Chinchillas breed very slowly compared to other rodents (they have normally 1 to 3 kits per litter, their pregancy is almost four months!) and are therefore very expensive to buy, so is their cage as it needs to be big and safe for them. Once they are all set up though, they are inexpensive to maintain, except for veterinary costs as they are exotics!

Because chinchillas are exotic animals, they need some special care. On my pages I am trying to cover the essentials, I will be adding information continuously, but it is so important to do good research on other sites and from other sources (books, chinchilla owners, breeders).

You may now ask, what entitles me to lecture about chinchillas? I am glad you ask the question (too many people don't): I have had chinchillas for well over ten years. I started off with two brothers, Jason (a standard grey) and Danny (a beige). Danny lived to the age of 4 1/2 and died of a mysterious illness. Jason lived to the age of almost 10 and died of old age about three years ago. My new chin family is Cara (a 2 year old brown velvet), Merlin (a two ear old pink white) and their daughter Roxie (a one year old standard grey). I have done a lot of research, as well as gained lot of experience over the years with these delightful creatures. And they are certainly playing an important part of my life.

All I can say now is HAVE FUN!

There is a wealth of information available on the Internet.I have listed some of the pages which I find useful and informative.
